What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “I want to get fit”? Many people see fitness or exercise as “four letter” words. “There’s no way I’m going to exercise”, “it’s too hard”, “takes too much time” or “it’s too painful and not fun” are common responses. Fitness is a critical part of living a healthy life and we’d like to help shed a little different light on it.
Let’s start with the word exercise. Do you really have to run 5 miles every day or be able to lift your body weight on equipment at the gym? NO! The phrase “fun sweaty activity” is a favorite of ours here at Positive Power Nutrition. Activity that engages muscles, causes deeper breathing, and increases blood flow throughout the body is “exercise”. Gardening, walking on your lunch break, cleaning the house or pushing the stroller through the mall can all be seen as exercise or fun sweaty activity. Yes, you can play football or run a marathon but that isn’t fun for everyone, so those aren’t the right workouts for everyone. Find an activity that gets your blood pumping and enjoy it!
There are 4 basic parts of fitness: Strength, Flexibility, Endurance and Recovery. All of these components should be part of any fun sweaty activity. Don’t be scared to sweat or get a little sore. You will reap tremendous rewards if you are regularly active (at least 4 times a week). Extending beyond the norm not only helps your physical body, but engages your mind and helps reduce the incidence of memory loss*. Fun sweaty activity also improves calming emotions.
What is one of the most important things to have in order to participate in fun sweaty activity? Energy! Energy can come from various sources including food, supplements, water, air, sunshine, sleep, exercise, spiritual pursuits, and emotional stability.
